So, Ashley, Co-founder of Smash + Tess, did a thing… she wrote a children’s book!
Just in time for Mother’s Day, “Frankie and the Magical Romper” launches online at Smash + Tess and Indigo, Chapters and Coles with the matching Pink Lemonade Romper Gift Set, a Romper for Mama and Mini, on April 24th at 8am PST.
We know our #smashtessgirls can’t resist twinning with their mini and will fall in love with this sweet story inspired by Ashley’s daughter, Frankie. The book captures the uniqueness of the mother- daughter relationship and is a fun adventure that is bound to be a fave bed-time story… because the “just one more story” struggle is real.
We wanted to learn more about how Ashley took an idea and became a published author and are sharing all about it!
What inspired you to write a book? Have you always been interested in writing?
My baby girl. I’ve been writing rhyming stories for the most part of my life. Once upon a time, I was a high school English teacher and creative writing has always been a passion of mine. I’ve written countless stories for my best friends and family to celebrate special occasions, and when my Frankie was born, I just knew that I wanted to write her something special.
Tell us a little bit about the book. What is it about and why do you think it's important?
When Frankie first sets her sights on the shiny package from her mom, she knows that she cannot possibly wait until the next day to open it. Against her mom’s wishes, she opens it anyway and much to her delight and surprise, it is a beautiful pink Romper just like her mom’s! When she puts it on, adventure ensues because not only is the Romper one of the prettiest things she has ever seen, but it’s MAGICAL! She simply must tell her mom everything —but how can she? She promised that she wouldn’t open it until tomorrow…
Frankie and the Magical Romper is a rhyming fun and dreamlike “romp” that reminds us of the transformative power of telling the truth, even when you might disappoint someone you love.
How did you come up with the concept? How did you get started on the daunting process of writing?
Frankie has this fantastic book about a bunny who watches over baby while she sleeps. Whenever I would read it, I would think about how there should be a bunny that goes along with the story so that she would feel extra safe. It made me think… we’ve had a lot of love for our Smash + Tess Mini Rompers, so wouldn’t it be cool if little girls could listen to or read a story that was about their Romper, while wearing their Romper?
The moment I put Frankie down that night, I went downstairs, told my family that I was going to write a book… and then I wrote the book... that night. Of course, there have been edits and it has evolved substantially- but the foundation of “Frankie and the Magical Romper” was written that very night. When I’m feeling creative and inspired, I never find the process of writing daunting.
Who is the book for?
I’ve dedicated the book to Frankie and imaginative little girls everywhere. And that is who it’s for. But also, Smash + Tess was founded by my mother and I and inspired by our love of matching PJs. This book about a little girl and her loving relationship with her mom is really an homage to my mom and to all of the Smash + Tess Mom and Daughter combos that love to twin and #rompsohard together. After all, is there anything more fun than a slumber party… well I suppose maybe a magical one - just as described in this book!
