What inspired you to collaborate with Smash + Tess to launch the Pieces of Me collection?
I choose to collaborate with Smash + Tess for many reasons! I love the idea of a women-owned, women-run business - I think that is so important! They are an inclusive brand which I appreciate and being a mom of 3, I look for comfortable + style. I knew we’d do something great together.
As a California mom, my style embodies the laid-back, casual vibe of flip-flops, bell bottoms, tank tops, layers, and dusters. I was inspired to share this fashion aesthetic with women everywhere, and that's why I wanted to create something that would bring this unique style to a wider audience.
What’s the design inspiration behind the collection?
The inspiration for this collection was drawn from the iconic 70s era! Being a California mom, I’m all about embracing the easygoing vibe of flip-flops, bell bottoms, tank tops, and layering with dusters. I wanted to create something that would offer all women the same effortless style, no matter how busy their day gets – from running errands to picking up their kids from school to hitting the gym. I’m incredibly proud of the collection we’ve created, which perfectly captures the groovy essence of that era.
What was the design process like? What did you enjoy most about designing new styles?
The design process with Smash + Tess was so fun - everyone there is so great! Ashley is just the best, we had such a good time working together. My vision was retro vibes and making that accessible and wearable for all women. We did a lot of collaborating on this collection and I think everyone will be super obsessed with all the pieces!
Smash + Tess’ mission is to empower women to live big lives with ease and confidence. What does this mean to you?
It is so beautiful that Smash + Tess has this mission of ease and confidence and bringing that to women - and men! As a mother myself, this resonates with me so much. We all strive to feel our best every day, and it's even better when we can feel supported and encouraged by those around us. It’s such a beautiful mission.
What inspired you to include styles for men, women, and children?
I knew right away I wanted to include my daughter in this collection, she has such a love for clothes that it just felt natural to include her. Of course, we had to include Evan as well, he has the best style! Everybody in our family has their own individual style and we all wear things differently so I thought this would be fun to do this together! I think it’s so special when a family can have pieces that they can all dress in together!
Can you tell us about the functionality of the pieces?
Creating a collection that offers versatility and various styling opportunities was really important to me. I wanted to provide women with a range of options that could be worn with heels or sneakers, worn for dinner with friends or while at home, and have layers they can add or remove. That's why every piece in this collection is designed with both style and practicality in mind.
What is your favourite piece in the collection and why?
That is so hard!!! I’m obsessed with the Far Out Overalls for when I’m at home, but the Down With Denim Overalls are so fun for going out! And the Disco Slip Dress is the ultimate piece for warmer weather, so I’m really torn! Honestly, I love the entire collection so much that it's hard to pick just one favourite! I can't wait to see how everyone styles their pieces and makes them their own.
What are you most excited about?
I’m so excited for the collection to drop! I can’t wait to see all the busy mamas, working women, and men, rocking their pieces from the Ashlee Simpson Ross x Smash + Tess collection!
