MEET ANUPA KING, CONTENT CREATOR & BODY POSITIVITY INFLUENCER

One thing that most of us have in common is that we love a good scroll on Insta! But what’s the story behind a picture?

We’re creating a community every time we post. We learn something new about someone and we can relate to their experiences. We love our community of #smashtessfam so much so that we created a space just for you over @smashtessgirl where we’ll share more of your photos and celebrate how you rock our Rompers!

Anupa King (@denupzter) has been one of our biggest cheerleaders since the beginning. Anupa is a mom who shares what post-partum really means to her and how her culture and past impacts her journey through it all. We love how she embraces her body and is helping so many women accept their new, amazingly capable post-baby bodies!

Anupa worked 3 jobs in Guyana, South America to save up to leave her family and friends for Canada when she was 19 years old. After a marriage and a divorce, she was alone in a new country where she had no friends or immediate support. She grew up in a culture where women were always blamed for any struggles, disappointments, or failures and sharing with others was considered a weakness.

She turned to Instagram as a place for connection and community during her journey in trying to become a mom and being a mom after meeting her husband, Andy. Now, she’s sharing her story with us:

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BRAND AND WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOU?

I was desperate to find other moms out there that were dealing with the same feelings as me. I wanted… I needed to know I wasn’t alone.

We struggled to get pregnant and when I finally had my son, I was holding my newborn, feeling all the worst feelings. This was the moment… I created my Instagram account to share my motherhood journey, to find others out there who were experiencing the same as me. I connected with moms in this space to help heal me and in turn heal others.

After having my son, Mikey, I fought so hard to love me again. When I got pregnant with Levi, I always felt the most beautiful while pregnant…. and then my most ugly after pregnancies. As sad as it sounds, it was the truth. I needed to change that…. my body was an absolute miracle. I was reborn after my babies and accepting that was key in healing my mind and body.

I was able to and continue to share my struggles openly… I saw Instagram as a space to sharing images with my words, it felt so empowering to share everything. Having it said out loud and out in the world made me feel responsible for who and what I stand for.  It brings me so much joy to share this beautiful journey called motherhood with PROFOUNDNESS.

WHAT'S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE THAT HAS SHAPED YOUR JOURNEY?

The best advice in accepting my post-partum body was to stop looking for the old me. There was a new version of myself and I needed to accepted and love that.

ONE TIP FOR BUILDING YOUR OWN BRAND OR BUSINESS?

Stay raw, stay real, stay honest, stay open… it all speaks the same. Showing your true self whether or not it’s good or bad is the key to finding what and who matters in your world.

WHAT DOES YOUR ULTIMATE SUNDAY CONSIST OF?

The ultimate Sunday would start with a sleep in and brunch but as a Mom to 2 busy boys, it’s more of a man on man defensive with each child to get breakfast going! We then rush off to swim for both boys and then find a spot to grab a bite to eat before it’s nap time … which usually ends up being in the car!

My husband and I try and figure out who can get a workout in… by this time one parent is left with two little humans full of energy. Here’s where someone is wishing Sunday be over already. lol

We usually order in for dinner so that I can take a night off cooking… and then we start the bedtime routine! It sounds chaotic but I wouldn’t change if for the world. Plus, I always enjoy the quiet time at the end of the evening with Andy and a glass of wine in hand.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

Women with CONFIDENCE … women with kind hearts. Women who know their strength and aren’t afraid to show it to the world. Women who stand alongside other women.

DESERT ISLAND BEAUTY PRODUCT?

I have to have my Vitamin C serum … it’s the one thing I never leave the house without. :)

FAVE PLACE TO ROCK YOUR ROMPER?

Being a mom I’m always on the go, every day is packed with activities. I literally live in my Rompers.

However, I absolutely LOVE to travel in my rompers. Every flight I’ve taken in the last couple of years has been in my Rompers. I have all the IG stories to prove it. Lol

WHICH GUILTY PLEASURE INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS ARE YOUR FAVE INSTA-FOLLOWS?

I do have a few right now, but my #1 right now for everything body and confidence is my beautiful friend Sarah @thebirdspapaya. Sarah is simply EPIC in this space.

Bethany @bethanyciotola is my absolute favourite mama right now. She's beyond cool and is as real as it gets! This mama tells you like it is with a twist of humor.

If I ever need a pick me up and a mama to have a heart to heart with my friend Kate is always there, @kweilz and I connected instantly and have been best friends since. Her creativity in this space is so inspiring.

WHOSE POSTER DID YOU HAVE ON YOUR BEDROOM WALL WHEN YOU WERE 12 YEARS OLD?

I grew up in Guyana where we couldn’t afford much. We didn’t own a television until I was 10 so it was a different but happy upbringing. My passion at 12 was classical Indian dancing so I probably would have had a poster of a dancer dressed for performance in my room!

As you can see, Anupa is so inspiring sharing her journey through motherhood and is definitely #rompresenting!
