Michelle Chubb (@indigenous_baddie) is a Swampy Cree woman, mama-to-be and viral content creator.
Through her mesmerizing powwow dance videos, she shines a light on Indigenous cultures in Canada, as well as debunks stereotypes and misinformation about her community. Her goal? Inspire others to love themselves.
We are so excited to be working with you and welcome you into the Smash + Tess Fam! For those who don’t know you, could you share a little bit about yourself?
Thank you, I am excited to join the family! I am a Swampy Cree woman living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I am originally from Bunibonibee Cree Nation. I create TikToks and Instagram content for the Indigenous community, and for those curious about Indigenous Peoples of Canada. I also strive to debunk stereotypes and misinformation.
Your powwow dances on TikTok are so captivating and we love learning more about your culture through your videos. What inspired you to use this platform to share Indigenous history and traditions?
When I first started on TikTok, I remember there was one comment saying, “I thought Indigenous people were extinct.” I was taken aback by that and wanted to show people the real Indigenous Peoples while having fun with what I create.
You’ve been featured in Teen Vogue, Refinery29, Fashion Magazine and more! How has this impacted your journey as an Indigenous content creator?
Honestly, I feel really honoured to be a part of those. I didn’t think I would be in this position three years ago! Just knowing that what I’m doing inspires others to love themselves makes me think I’m doing the right thing.
You recently announced that you’re a mama-to-be! What are you most looking forward to about motherhood?
Yes, I’m super excited to be a new mommy! I’m looking forward to showing my baby all that I was taught—to be humble, kind and loving no matter what circumstances. Also, I can’t wait to teach my baby the ways of the Cree traditions and culture!
What are some Indigenous brands and content creators that you love to follow and support?
I really love Shina Nova, she shows her love for her Inuk culture. Scott Wabano is a two-spirited Cree Indigenous person who showcases the struggles of two-spirited people, plus his passion for fashion! Mikey Harris and Sherry Mckay are from the same city as me, and they also make Indigenous content. Theland Kicknosway is also an Indigenous content creator that focuses on culture, namely grass dancing. Cheekbone Beauty is a makeup brand—they make gorgeous lipsticks and other makeup products. Rez Gal Lashes sell beautiful lashes and other cute products. Indi-City makes beautiful earrings which I highly recommend! Section 35 sells some pretty nice clothing that incorporates Indigenous culture & language. Kokom Scrunchies sell scrunchies and they all look cute!
